VIU fully supports the Universities Canada statement released on Sunday, January 29 in response to the US Executive Order.
VIU is a community that welcomes students, faculty and guests from more than 90 countries around the world. We are an open and supportive community that celebrates and welcomes diversity.
Next week VIU will celebrate our annual International Development Week, filled with workshops and activities that are focused on the theme of “Celebrating Global Citizenship." We invite everyone in our community to take part in these activities to learn how we can support diversity and build a world based on mutual respect and understanding between cultures.
This past month, VIU’s faculty, staff and students were also at the forefront of organizing the Nanaimo event in support of the Women’s March on Washington. Participation in the event, which took place on January 21, exceeded original expectations with approximately 1,000 community members coming together to demonstrate their support for women’s rights and an inclusive society.
VIU will remain open and welcoming. We will continue to take the lead on events such as these, to create a community on and off our campuses that welcomes and supports all.
We understand that there may be some in our community who are impacted by current events. Please remember that counselling service are available, including immigration advising.
Students can access services by calling 250.740.6416 or visiting the Counselling Services website. Students can also access counselling and advising services, including immigration advising, in the Centre for International Education or by visiting the international advising website. Faculty and staff can call 1.800.663.1142 or visit VIU’s Human Resources website.
