Vancouver Island University’s (VIU’s) Esthetics and Spa Therapy program has moved into a beautifully renovated space next to the Hairdressing program and everyone is invited to come check it out on Tuesday, November 5.
Members of the public can take a tour around the new space, meet students and learn about the services they provide to the community in Building 164 at the Nanaimo campus. Taking place from 5 to 7 pm, the event will include question-and-answer sessions and discounts on salon and spa products. There will also be a front-end person available for people who want to book appointments. Free parking will be available in Lot C.
Over the summer, the building, which already housed the Hairdressing program, was renovated to accommodate the Esthetics program as well. Co-locating these two programs allows for expanded experiential learning opportunities, as they are both service-oriented trades programs. It also gives students the experience of working in a spa-like setting, according to Instructor and Program Chair Joanne Slocum.
“This has been a long-time goal for both programs,” she said. “With both programs in the same space, students have the chance to be part of a more dynamic and collaborative environment, and practice their skills according to industry standards. Instructors also have the opportunity to collaborate on the creation of learning activities to meet both hair and esthetics learning outcomes.”
For example, Slocum said students in both programs have already collaborated on a Halloween-themed hair and makeup project.
The Esthetics program was previously located in rented space in Parksville. The move will increase access, as there are more transportation options in Nanaimo. It also allows the program to expand by two seats, helping to address the waitlist for entry and regional demand for estheticians, said Slocum. According to the Government of Canada’s Job Bank, demand for occupations in personal services continues to be stable with opportunities in every region in the province. Employment in these occupations tends to be high with many opportunities available.
“I look forward to seeing the growth and enhancement of both the hair and esthetics programs,” said Slocum. “We invite our loyal customer base to join us at our new location on the Nanaimo campus and thank them for supporting student learning opportunities.”
For new or returning clients of either program, appointments can be booked by calling 250-740-6115.
