If you love tea, marine sea life and beautiful views take note. Vancouver Island University's (VIU) Deep Bay Marine Field Station will offer High Tea by the Sea on Nov. 18 and Dec. 2 and a special Christmas tea on Dec. 16.
“We started High Tea by the Sea last spring and it’s become so popular that we’re expanding it to select dates throughout the year,” says Stephanie Richards, Facilities Coordinator of the Field Station events. “We consistently served approximately 60 people at each High Tea during the summer, and most days we had to turn people away. We’ve decided to add more dates in November and December.”
High Tea includes a delicious selection of sandwiches, pastries and other goodies prepared on-site by resident Red Seal Chef Lila Ruzicka. Gluten free options are available, and other dietary restrictions can be accommodated if requested in advance.
Richards invites members of the public with a creative flair to enter the Station’s marine themed “Tea Cosy Contest.” Submissions will be accepted until Dec. 15 and winner will be announced at the Christmas High Tea Dec. 16. Entries must be hand-crafted, fit a large six cup tea pot and have a marine theme.
Admission to High Tea is $20 per person and includes free entrance to the Field Station. Reservations are required by calling 250.740.6611.
High Tea guests are invited to take self-guided tours of the facility to learn about marine science. Don’t miss the large public aquaria, colourful exhibits and touch tanks teeming with marine life collected from BC waters.
Proceeds from the High Tea events benefit the Station’s education programs.
VIU’s Deep Bay Marine Field Station is located about an hour and 20 minutes north of Nanaimo. For driving directions, more information about the Field Station or High Tea, or for Tea Cozy contest details, go to. www.viu.ca/deepbay/hightea.
