In the next Vancouver Island University (VIU) Science & Technology lecture on Feb. 4, Dr. Jerome Lesemann will debunk the myth that glaciers are lumbering masses of ice that grind rocks and ‘bulldoze’ sediments.
Dr. Lesemann, a professor in VIU’s Earth Sciences department, will present glaciers as fascinating geomorphic agents that have shaped the Canadian landscape.
Glaciers are dynamic systems that change their behavior in response to a host of variables. The production, storage, and release of water within a glacier can radically alter the behavior of a glacier and lead to the production of unique landforms and sediments, according to Dr. Lesemann.
Dr. Lesemann’s interest in glaciers has taken him to Scandinavia, Iceland, Greenland and many glaciated regions of Canada. Prior to coming to VIU, he worked at the Geological Survey of Canada in Ottawa on projects related to mineral exploration in glaciated regions.
His lecture takes places from 7 to 8 pm on Wednesday, February 4 at VIU’s Nanaimo campus, 900 Fifth Street, Building 356, Room 109.
