VIU Scholarship, Research and Creative Activity Office’s fall lunch and learn series fosters supportive environment to present and discuss ideas.

Lunch can be a time to nourish the mind as well as the body thanks to Vancouver Island University’s (VIU’s) annual Bring Your Lunch and Learn Series starting this fall.

The series, presented by VIU’s Scholarship, Research and Creative Activity Office, aims to create a culture of sharing knowledge, having open discussions and fostering a supportive environment where people can present and discuss their ideas and insight about various topics. The sessions are open to the public and everyone is invited to bring their lunch, listen to the presentations and participate in a 30-minute discussion.

“I love this series because I’m always learning something new, and about things I wouldn’t normally be exposed to. Learning new information helps keep our brains active, our minds engaged, and helps build a culture of sharing and community,” says Tanis Dagert, Community Liaison and Knowledge Mobilization Officer, who coordinates the series.

It allows VIU faculty, staff and students a chance to share ideas they are excited about, test-run topics they might present at other conferences or gain experience defending their thesis.

This year, topics cover a range of subject matters including sustainability, community radio, mindfulness, teaching with beer and more. Sessions are held on scheduled Tuesdays from 12 – 1 pm in Building 305, Room 440.

The series kicks off with a panel discussion, as part of VIU Sustainability Week, on Tuesday, September 24, titled Sustainability is What We Do: Integrating Sustainability into Teaching, with Don Alexander, Mary Anne Moloney, Marti Harder, Matt Bowes, Wendy Simms, Sandra Johnstone and Lindsay McCunn.
