Friday, January 17, 2020: All VIU campuses (Nanaimo, Cowichan and Powell River) and the Parksville/Qualicum Centre are open today, Friday, January 17, for classes and regular business. The G.R. Paine Horticultural Centre, Milner Gardens and Woodland, and the Deep Bay Marine Field Station are also open.
VIU will continue to monitor the weather and share updates as required.
Expect winter conditions today travelling to and from VIU, so please use caution. At the Nanaimo campus, conditions are wet, slushy and icy in spots, so please wear suitable footwear and report any slippery sections to Facilities Services at facility@viu.ca or 250.740.6500.
We know our region has many micro-climates and conditions can vary dramatically.
For students:
If you are unable to get to your campus or will be late because of inclement weather conditions, please contact your instructors. If you have dependants affected by school or day care closures and alternative arrangements cannot be made, please communicate with your instructors. We encourage you to use your discretion and work with your instructor to make alternate arrangements.
For employees:
If you are unable to report to work or will be late to work because of inclement weather conditions and/or you have dependents affected by school or day care closures and alternative arrangements cannot be made, please contact your manager/department lead. We encourage you to use your discretion and work with your manager to make alternate work arrangements.
Normally, you have the option of either:
- Taking a vacation day.
- Making up the time.
- Using lieu time (where applicable).
- Taking leave without pay.
- Working from home (where applicable).
